Election observers from the European Parliament say there were a host of irregularities in Ukraine's recent local elections, the UNIAN news agency reported on Saturday.

The country's opposition said there were "mass violations" during the October 31 polls. President Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions received 36.3 percent of the vote while opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko's Batkyvshchyna party got just 13.1 percent.

A rerun of the poll will be held in more than 250 constituencies, according to the URA-Inform news agency.

European Parliament observers Pawel Kowal and Jan Kozlowski said in their report that there was not enough time to prepare for the elections since an elections law came into force only on July 31.

Opposition candidates had difficulty registering for the polls due to red tape, which resulted in the Party of Regions being at the top of the ballot in 85 percent of constituencies.

Kowal and Kozlowski added that there were other irregularities reported in Ukrainian media but said it was impossible to investigate all the claims.
