Kazakhstan's political system will be gradually modernized, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev pledged in his election campaign programme, which was released on Tuesday.

Long-serving Nazarbayev will stand for re-election on April 3. There are three candidates standing against him - Senator Gani Kasimov, Communist Zhambyl Ahmetbekov, and Tabiyat Ecological Union leader Mels Eleusizov.

“We will systematically modernize our political system. We will continue the reforming of all its basic elements - increasing the role of parliament, political parties and local authorities, strengthening the independence of the judiciary,” Nazarbayev’s program read said.

Nazarbayev, 70, has ruled Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union. He is widely expected to triumph in the upcoming elections, which were called a year early after he rejected a parliament-proposed referendum that would have kept him in power without seeking reelection until 2020.

The move was praised the European Union, which earlier warned that the holding of the referendum instead of the scheduled elections would contradict Kazakhstan's commitment to democracy.
