Siamese twins are rare – just one case per 200,000 births. There are two theories to explain the phenomenon. The first theory is that the fertilized egg only partially splits into zygotes and the second is that the egg completely separates but the cells fuse together later.
To date there have been many cases of successful and unsuccessful surgical procedures to separate Siamese twins, while there are many cases of conjoined twins, who have lived happy and active lives without being separated.
