Russian-Swiss diplomatic relations were established on February 25, 1814. Before the start of the 20th century, Switzerland had consulates across the Russian Empire - St. Petersburg, Moscow, Odessa, Riga, Warsaw, Tbilisi and Kiev - that focused on issues of Swiss settlements in Russia and trade relations. The first Swiss embassy in St. Petersburg was opened in 1906.

After the Russian Revolution in 1917 Switzerland did not officially recognize the Soviet government and diplomatic relations were broken off.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were re-established on March 18, 1946.

Switzerland was one of the first countries to recognize the Russian Federation as the legal successor to the Soviet Union on December 23, 1991.
