Commander of the Russian Baltic Fleet Vice Adm. Viktor Chirkov is likely to be appointed the new commander of the Pacific Fleet, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

"The most likely candidate for the post of the commander of the Pacific Fleet is Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov," the source told RIA Novosti.

Current commander of the Pacific Fleet Adm. Konstantin Sidenko was earlier appointed commander of the operative strategic command Vostok in the Russian Far East.
