A British military delegation will visit on Monday two naval bases belonging to Russia's Northern Fleet to honor the memory of British soldiers who perished in the region during the two world wars.

The delegation, headed by British Consul General in St. Petersburg Gareth Ward, will visit a World War I cemetery in Murmansk and the Vaenga military cemetery in Severomorsk.

The so-called British Cemetery in Murmansk is the burial place of British troops who were sent to Russia in 1918-1920 to support the White Russians against the Bolsheviks after the revolution. The troops held the northern cities of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk for a time, before the British government decided to withdraw its forces.

Severomorsk was one of the three harbors in northern Russia used for Allied lend-lease supplies during World War II. Vaenga Cemetery in Severomorsk contains the graves of six World War II Commonwealth airmen.

The agenda of the visit also includes a meeting with the Commander of the Northern Fleet, Vice Admiral Nikolai Maksimov.
