RIO DE JANEIRO, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - A violent storm has swept through southern Brazil and northern Argentina, killing at least 14 people in the two countries, local emergencies services and media said on Wednesday.
At least four people were killed and over 80 injured when a powerful cyclone with winds raging up to 120 kmph (75 mph) made landfall in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on Tuesday evening and moved westwards, to the Argentinean border.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Brazilian border town of Guaraciaba. The storm damaged 70% of the buildings, as well as power lines and communications, in the town with the population of 10,000.
At least 10 people died and 50 were injured when the storm, described as "a violent tornado," hit the town of Santa Rosa in the northeastern Argentinean province of Misiones, The Buenos Aires Herald reported.
Seven children - aged between four and six - were among the victims.
