GROZNY, October 19 (RIA Novosti) - The leaders of the bandit formations on Chechnya's territory try to use drug trafficking as a source of financing. This is said in the statement of the Regional Operational Staff (ROSh) for controlling the counter terrorist operation in the North Caucasus, received by RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"Of late the law-enforcement bodies have been receiving information that bandits' ringleaders Aslan Maskhadov and Shamil Basayev have taken a decision to use the production and trafficking of narcotics as an additional source of financing terrorist activity", the statement says.

As the ROSh reports, according to the information obtained from the detainees, the bandits are trying to establish a channel for illegal supplies of strong narcotics, heroin in particular, to Chechnya.

"The bandits' ringleaders also plan to set up a widely ramified network of drug traffickers on the territory of Chechnya and in the republics neighboring on it," the document reads.

"The bandits' ringleaders intend to draw the maximal possible number of people of the younger generation for making it easier to later recruit them into the illegal armed formations," the statement goes on to say.

For instance, a 29-year-old local resident, who was a member of the gang of one of Shamil Basayev' assistants, was detained by the law-enforcement bodies in the Gudermes district some time ago. Heroin was found on him during the detention. In the course of the investigation the detainee indicated the location of a cache containing a lot of drugs packed for trafficking in the Gudermes district." "More than 2 kg of heroin was seized in the cache," the document reads.

It notes that the law-enforcement bodies are taking all necessary measures to block the channels for drugs supplies to the Chechen Republic, and to expose the individuals involved in drug business.
