PETROZAVODSK, APRIL 14, (RIA Novosti - North-West, Alexei Ukkone) - An international science-practical conference dealing with Karelian-German cooperation is to open here today.

Talking to RIA Novosti, people at the Petrozavodsk municipal administration's press center noted that the conference will involve city-hall representatives, academics, students, as well as creative intellectuals and public organization representatives from Karelia, St. Petersburg, Vologda and German cities maintaining twin-city relations with Petrozavodsk.

Conference delegates are to discuss cooperation between Karelia and Germany in the field of historical research, education and culture. Moreover, the conference will examine the training of Russian managers on German territory, cooperation in overhauling the penitentiary system, joint fascism-and-xenophobia prevention, as well as some other issues.

Those taking part in the conference will attach priority to twin-city relations between Petrozavodsk and Germany's Neubrandenburg and Tubingen. The Petrozavodsk municipal administration believes that "such ties help improve the reputation of Karelia and Petrozavodsk as an open region that is interested in the development of international cooperation." Moreover, these contacts "positively influence the socio-economic and cultural development of Petrozavodsk and Karelia."

This conference was organized by Karelia's state teacher-training university and the Petrozavodsk municipal administration with the support of Russia's Education and Science Ministry.
