The St. George Ribbon 2009 project has got underway in Russia. People wear these black-and-orange ribbons as a tribute to veterans of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War and those killed in action. Motorists tie them to car aerials.
This is the fifth St. George Ribbon project.

In the past four years, over 45 million St. George Ribbons have been distributed worldwide.
This year, the residents of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a town in Sakhalin Island, Russia’s Far East, were the first to join the project. School and college students, activists of various public organizations and patriotic clubs distributed St. George Ribbons all over the town.
This small marquee distributing the ribbons was among the first to open near RIA Novosti Agency on Moscow’s Zubovsky Boulevard.

Motorists prefer to tie them to car aerials and mirrors. Some motorists keep the ribbons for the whole year.

The Guards Ribbon symbolizing military valor was made part of the Order of Glory, awarded to non-commissioned Red Army officers and rank-and-file soldiers during the Great Patriotic War.
