The Zapad-2009 strategic exercise, launched on September 8 under the command of Nikolai Makarov, chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, and Belarusian Defense Minister Leonid Maltsev, will continue until September 29. The exercise is the final phase of the Russian-Belarusian Union State’s military-training program for 2009.
