Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited Khanty-Mansiisk on March 23, 2010. He inspected the West Sakhalinskoye Field before chairing an economy modernization commission’s meeting on energy efficiency in fuel and energy sectors.
The West Sakhalinskoye Field is managed by Surgutneftegaz and is located almost 100 kilometers from Khanty-Mansiisk. The field can be reached by car through Surgut or by helicopter. The president chose the latter.
Dmitry Medvedev visited a booster station that collects oil and gas and treats it for further transportation to the pumping facility.
The president also inspected a gas engine power plant and the field’s multi-well platform where he examined the drilling facilities and various pieces of oil production and processing equipment.

While visiting the Priobskoye Oilfield, Dmitry Medvedev took part in commissioning the first stage of a gas turbine power plant. Rosneft’s President Sergei Bogdanchikov (left)
After the visit, journalists asked the president about his impressions. “Everything is fine, it is an up-to-date facility. If we keep working like this, our modernization plans will work, otherwise nothing will come of it,” he replied.
West Sakhalinskoye Field’s main issue was utilizing associated petroleum gas but this was resolved when the gas engine power plant was constructed in 2009. The facility was put into service in 2005, and has already produced 580,000 tons of oil. Last year alone, it accounted for 284,500 tons. Production is expected to reach 433,200 tons in 2010.
