On September 23, 2010, the Russian training barque Sedov crossed the 78th parallel north to become the world’s first sailing ship of its class to reach the Arctic territories of the Svalbard Archipelago in this time of year.

The Sedov has set a new record, as no other vessel of its class has traveled northward to such remote areas in this time of year, which is practically wintertime here. The ship’s crew came on deck and was captivated by the snowy mountains, glaciers and beautiful scenery.
On the second day there, the ship made a stop at Svalbard’s administrative center, Longyearbyen. Right after mooring, locals visited the Sedov, many of whom have long lived on the island and remember the ship’s first visit in the summer of 2006.
For them, the arrival of the sailing ship giant and the chance to check out the vessel was a pleasant surprise. The crew and cadets were pleased to get to know better this rapidly developing Arctic oasis, the population of which has already reached 2,500 people.
