“The Demon” is among Vrubel’s most famous masterpieces, depicting a “suffering and mournful, rather than evil, spirit who, nonetheless, retains his domineering and regal essence.”

For a long time, Vrubel was known as a talented interior designer catering to Moscow’s patrons of the arts and the bourgeoisie.

Music, literature and theater arts greatly influenced Vrubel’s painting style. Such characters as the Sea Queen, the Valkyrie, the Muse, the Sorceress, the Swan Princess and Pan are based on various fairy tales and sagas.
