On October 16, it took several hours for rescuers to remove three young people who climbed the masts of a legendary cruiser in St. Petersburg and flew a Jolly Roger as their protest against poverty.
Young people who identified themselves as modern artists of the Food Not Bombs organization and announced that their Memorial October, or Aurora Sunday campaign, was dedicated to the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Other media reported that it was the Voina art group, famous for its shocking escapades, that was behind the act of hooliganism. The sources close to the art group, however, denied its participation in the Aurora hooliganism.
Five of the eight activists have previously been detained. The detainees were escorted to a police station for a full report on the incident.
The young people entered the cruiser as tourists.
In 1917, during the October Revolution, a blank round shot from the Aurora cruiser signaled the siege of the Winter Palace. For many years, the ship had been labeled the Revolution Ship and “ship number one” of the Russian Navy until in 1941, and then the Aurora was again brought into service as a training ship. In 1944, the cruiser was permanently anchored on the Neva River in St. Petersburg.
