LENIN'S MAUSOLEUM REOPENS

10:53 19/04/2005
MOSCOW, April 19 (RIA Novosti)

Vladimir Lenin's embalmed body goes back on display in its

Red Square mausoleum Tuesday after two months of annual "cleaning." The works were conducted by experts from the research center of biomedical technologies under the All-Russia Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

Institute deputy director Yuri Denisov-Nikolsky told RIA Novosti that the prophylactic work was done in a regular mode.

In his opinion, with appropriate care and timely preservation procedures Lenin's body can be kept in the Mausoleum for another 100 years.

Lenin's Mausoleum has been closed to public access since February 14. Federal Protection Service (FSO) spokesperson Sergei Devyatov told RIA Novosti that the Mausoleum was closed for scheduled biochemical treatment of Lenin's body. "Such practices have existed ever since the construction of the Mausoleum," he pointed out.

The Mausoleum is annually closed for "preservation work" for about two months, rarely - for several days. Last year it was closed during summer.

In previous years, the state financed the works. At present, a science fund allocates money for biochemical treatment of Lenin's body.
