President Putin: Russia to back UN reform based on consensus

MOSCOW, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox Tuesday that Russia would back any reasonable decision on the United Nations reform if it was based on a consensus.

"We had an intense dialogue on UN reform," Putin said. "We are ready to back any sensible solution based on a broad consensus."

Putin said Russia and Mexico's positions on the key issues discussed at the UN largely coincided.

"We feel that Mexico always takes an independent position and is a reliable partner," he said.

"We believe it important that Mexico has supported the initiative on joint efforts against terrorism. Joining efforts in the fight with drug traffic on a bilateral basis and within international organizations is a very important issue of common interest," Putin said.

Fox said the two countries would continue discussing those issues and sharing experience.

"Today, a proposal was made to intensify dialogue given the current situation," Fox said.
