A group of fishermen found the whale yesterday. They managed to drag it on two fishing boats back into deep waters.
"The whale was alive, splashing its tail, and was very active on the whole," the source said. "However, the mammal was found dead the next morning in the same region where it was stranded the day before."
According to witnesses, the dead whale was laying in tidal waves, which means that it could not have died from its skin being dried out, a common cause of death for whales.
A preliminary inspection of the whale revealed no injuries, wounds, or traces of disease.
Ecologists took samples of the mammal's tissue, a detailed photo, and video footage so that experts would be able to determine the cause of the whale stranding.
