Trans-Korean railroad construction postponed because of Pyongyang

MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Talks on the construction of the Trans-Korean railroad were stopped on North Korea's initiative, Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin said Tuesday.

"At the end of last year, North Korea said that at a time when the United States is toughening its policy in regard to the DPRK, the Korean side 'sees no sense' in holding a second trilateral expert meeting on the reunification of the Trans-Korean railroad," Yakunin said.

The railroad was to be linked with the Russian Trans-Siberian railroad that starts in Moscow and ends in Vladivostok in the Far East.

Trilateral negotiations (North Korea, South Korea, and Russia) on railroad transportation have unfortunately stopped, Yakunin said.

According to experts, high-speed trains via North Korea and traveling further along the Trans-Siberian railroad are capable of annually delivering up to 200,000 large cargo containers to Western Europe in 10-12 days, with guaranteed cargo safety, making it much cheaper than any other form of transportation.
