For example, 964 birds have been slaughtered at private farms in the Chelyabinsk region, the local emergency situations department said Tuesday.
Birds have also been slaughtered in the village of Oktyabrskoye, where the first bird flu cases were registered. In all, local private farms keep about 70,000 birds.
The local hospital has been preparing to receive people infected with bird flu. Sixty-five workers of the veterinarian service and residents of the village have undergone medical tests, but no bird flu cases have been diagnosed so far and all of the people are under permanent medical supervision, a local doctor said.
Now that people receive compensation for their slaughtered poultry, more people in the Tyumen region (Western Siberia) are giving up their infected birds, the local emergencies department said.
All the poultry in six settlements have been slaughtered. People in the Tyumen and Chelyabinsk regions have received payments worth a total of 1.7 million ($60,000) but the emergencies department did not specify how many birds were killed.
Poultry farms are still operating in isolation, but vehicle checks have been stepped up to maintain quarantine measures.
No bird flu cases have been registered in other towns outside Tyumen, the emergencies department said. But, according to local veterinarians, the disease has been registered in four districts of the Kurgansk region (Western Siberia). About 800 poultry have died or been slaughtered in these districts.
