Liberal conservatism is natural policy for United Russia - Russian parliamentarian
PSKOV, August 28 (RIA Novosti) -- Liberal conservatism is a natural policy for the United Russia party, a member of the Russian parliament said at the opening of the Assistance to the Formation of the New Europe international seminar in Pskov (northwestern Russia).
Mikhail Margelov, the chairman of the Federation Council Committee for Foreign Affairs, said, "The phenomenon of liberal conservatism is natural for United Russia because conservative ideas in Russia have replaced "naive liberalism of the 1990."
According to Margelov, the modern Russian society has lost faith in the Communist slogans, and Russian Communists have not 'grown up' to become social democrats yet.
Speaking about radical nationalists, the parliamentarian added "their rating is not high mostly because a scary content of their programs."
Addressing the forum, a British expert also called for a conservative approach in politics, saying the UK achieved positive results while pursuing conservative policies.
At the same time, he said, the political process should not neglect freedom speech and active participation of the public in the establishment of a civil society.
