MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) -An outbreak of bird flu in Russia is subsiding, the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare reported Monday.

"The bird flu outbreak is receding," a news release on the service's Web site said. "The affected area still covers regions in the Urals and Siberian federal districts: the Altai territory, the Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, Tyumen and Omsk regions. Bird flu has been confirmed in 47 populated areas."

The release said doctors were continuing to make repeat rounds, and that about 23,500 people had been examined in the last 24 hours.

"No one who has come into contact with infected birds has been diagnosed with the virus [and] no birds have died in the last 24 hours," the service said.
