MOSCOW, December 22 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's acting charge d'affaires said Thursday that he saw no rapprochement in the Russian and Ukrainian positions on the Azov-Kerch problem regarding the status of that inter-border water area.

"Unfortunately, the positions of the sides are far from each other," Leonid Osavolyuk said.

He criticized Russia's position on the issue, calling certain Russian proposals "exotic".

According to Osavolyuk, Russia proposed leaving the Kerch Strait without any border or marking it along the coast or the fairway.

Kiev wants the new border to be the administrative border between Russia and Ukraine established in the 1950s when the Crimean peninsula was made a part of the latter.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that the Russian-Ukrainian agreement on cooperation in the use of the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait did not stipulate the demarcation of the Kerch Strait and that Kiev's distortion of Moscow's position on the problem could affect the negotiations.
