ST. PETERSBURG, February 1 (RIA Novosti, Olga Vtorova) - The Russian Navy plans to build 20 new frigates over the next 15-20 years, the force's chief said Wednesday.
Admiral Vladimir Masorin said, "We plan to build a large series of these ships, at least 20. We plan to build at least five ships for each fleet [Black Sea, Baltic, Pacific, and North Atlantic]."
By Russian military classification, a frigate is a large multi-purpose escort ship.
"In the near future, this will be our main ship. In its capabilities, it will not fall short of foreign vessels of its class," he said.
