MOSCOW, March 6 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's proposal to set up a joint uranium enrichment venture with Iran still stands, the country's foreign minister said Monday.

Sergei Lavrov said the implementation of this proposal required other measures, including Iran's resumption of a uranium enrichment moratorium.

"A whole set of measures is needed, including Iran's resumption of the moratorium and return to the observation of the additional protocol [to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] and its ratification," Lavrov said.

The mooted deal with Russia on uranium enrichment, which could also involve China, is seen as a potential compromise in the crisis around the nuclear programs of the Islamic Republic, which some countries suspect of pursuing a covert weapons program. Although Tehran has consistently said it only wants nuclear power for peaceful purposes, the United States and other nations have concerns, as enriched uranium is a vital component for an atomic bomb.
