"Is it not odd that one suspect committed suicide in The Hague prison and another died of what was reported as a heart attack?"

MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - The speaker of Russia's upper house of parliament said Tuesday that the Hague tribunal was responsible for the death of Slobodan Milosevic.

"The Hague tribunal denied Milosevic the right to live," Sergei Mironov told reporters, adding that another prison inmate had committed suicide the same week.

"Is it not odd that one suspect committed suicide in The Hague prison and another died of what was reported as a heart attack?" he said.

Mironov said Milosevic had requested the tribunal to let him undergo treatment in Moscow.

"The request was turned down," he said. "This is why Milosevic's death lies at The Hague tribunal's door."

Milosevic, 64, was found dead in his prison cell March 11. Preliminary reports suggest he died of a heart attack. The former Yugoslav president was on trial on charges of war crimes and genocide.

Mironov said Milosevic could be buried in Russia if his relations asked. Russian television reported Tuesday that Milosevic, revered by some in his country as a national hero and accused by others of splitting the country and inciting ethnic strife, would be buried in Serbia.

Belgrade has given permission for the burial and a Serbian court has lifted the arrest warrant for Milosevic's wife, Mirjana Marcovic, during her husband's funeral. Marcovic, who faces corruption charges in Serbia, lives in Moscow.

Respected business daily Kommersant Monday cited Zdenko Tomanovic, Milosevic's Serbian lawyer, as saying his client had complained of attempts to poison him.

Tribunal officials dismissed the accusation, saying Milosevic had taken some non-prescription pills, which they said had been confirmed by tests conducted in January, and that Milosevic was trying to get sick so as to be sent to Moscow.
