Russia, China sign multibillion-dollar contracts during Putin's visit

BEIJING, March 21 (RIA Novosti) - Day one of President Vladimir Putin's visit to China produced a number of bilateral agreements, including on energy supplies and cooperation in disaster management and prevention of money laundering.

Putin said Tuesday that he hoped all the agreements would be implemented, as "multibillion-dollar contacts are behind them."

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese Minister for Civil Affairs Li Xueju signed intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in emergencies prevention and relief.

Russia's Federal Financial Monitoring Service and the People's Bank of China signed an agreement on intelligence sharing to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorist activities.

Utility giant Unified Energy Systems signed an electricity export contact with China's State Grid Corporation, while state-owned oil major Rosneft and natural gas monopoly Gazprom signed agreements on supplies and joint ventures with the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation.

Telecoms company Kosmicheskaya Svyaz and Chinanetcomgroup Ltd. agreed to cooperate in providing international satellite television broadcasts of the 2008 Olympic Games, to be hosted by Beijing.

The St. Petersburg city government signed agreements with China's Eximbank and with the Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation, which is financing a massive development project in Russia's second city.
