Kaliningrad tanker fire extinguished, four injured

MOSCOW, April 5 (RIA Novosti) - A fire on board a tanker at a shipyard in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad has been put out leaving four people injured, the emergencies ministry said Thursday.

Gavana, a 10,000-ton tanker carrying 200 tons of diesel and fuel oil anchored at the Yantar shipyard, caught fire at 20.30 Moscow time (16.30 GMT) on Wednesday after a series of explosions, sources said.

"The fire could have been caused by an electric short-circuit or a spark that ignited fuel vapors," a local prosecutor said, adding that a blast ripped a hole in the ship's side and caused a minor oil leak.

But the emergencies ministry said that there had been no leak and the few oil spots near the ship were the result of a regular wash-off from the tanker's hull.

Three crewmembers and a firefighter were injured in the accident. Two of them have been hospitalized, the ministry said.
