VOLGOGRAD, April 14 (RIA Novosti) - Two people have been killed in an apparently racially motivated attack on a gypsy camp in the Volga area, local police said Friday.
A group of about ten young men armed with wooden sticks and iron bars attacked the camp in Volgograd Region Thursday night, killing a man and a woman. A girl and an elderly woman were hospitalized with injuries.
Local prosecutors said they had launched a criminal case and were checking whether the attackers were members of a local skinhead gang.
The attack is the latest in a string of apparently racially motivated incidents to have hit Russia in recent months. The latest was the murder of a Senegalese student in St. Petersburg April 7 that sparked protests in Russia's second city.
