French Embassy in Moscow resumes visa service after strike

MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - The French Embassy in Moscow said Tuesday it was issuing visas as normal after a strike on Thursday left hundreds of would-be holidaymakers stranded.

Travel agents in the Russian capital said about 1,500 people, many of whom were intending to leave Russia for the May public holidays, had been unable to obtain their travel documents on time.

But the issuing service has returned to normal.

"All the employees of the consulate department are working and issues are being issued properly," the embassy's press service said.

A source in the embassy said on condition of anonymity that the one-day strike, called following trade union demands to improve working conditions for locally hired employees, had not affected individual applicants, but tour operators.

About a dozen representatives of Russian tour operators have gathered in front of the embassy seeking a meeting with the consul.
