MAKHACHKALA/ROSTOV-ON-DON, May 6 (RIA Novosti) - One soldier has been killed and four others wounded in a shootout during an ongoing operation by security forces in the North Caucasus region of Daghestan, a police official said Saturday.
"According to preliminary data, the shootout occurred near the village of Kazanishchi," the official said. "One soldier has been killed and four others have been wounded."
He did not specify the number of casualties among the militants, but said a combined force of military and federal security units was sweeping the area in pursuit of a militant group numbering about 20 people.
Local prosecutors have launched an investigation into the death and wounding of the servicemen.
