Russia against use of force to solve Iran nuclear issue - Ivanov
Topic: Iran joins nuclear club
TEHRAN, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is against the use of force to solve the Iran nuclear issue, the secretary of the Russian Security Council said Sunday.
The Russian delegation led by Igor Ivanov arrived Saturday in Tehran on a two-day visit to discuss ways to solve the Iran nuclear problem.
"Compared to the United States, Russia believes that the Iran nuclear problem must be solved through dialog. Any use of force will only complicate the problem and create tension in the region," Ivanov said.
The United States and other western nations accuse Iran of carrying out its nuclear program as a cover for the production of weapons but Iran insists its program is meant for peaceful purposes.
The U.S., France and Britain are pressing for a new binding UN Security Council resolution to get Iran to abandon its controversial nuclear program. Russia and China say the issue should be resolved through diplomacy.
The Iranian-Russian negotiations in Tehran are being held behind closed doors.
