MAKHACHKALA, June 5 (RIA Novosti) - At least 12 million rubles (over $440,000) was stolen in an attack that left three people dead in Daghestan Monday, police in the Russian North Caucasus republic said.

A cash-in-transit vehicle had picked up its cargo - thought to be gold coins - from a bank when it was attacked in woods in the central region of the republic. An explosive device is thought to have been detonated and the van then came under gunfire.

The assailants killed the driver and two cash collectors and seized an automatic rifle, a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle.
