MOSCOW, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - About 1.5 million birds have died or been culled in Russia due to bird flu since the start of the year, the Agriculture Ministry said Wednesday.

Although no human lives have been claimed in Russia, figures made public in April indicated that around 1.1 million birds had died of the disease and 300,000 had been culled to control the spread of the virus since the beginning of February.

The ministry said 14 regions of Russia had been affected by the disease this year and six villages in two regions of Siberia remained under the close supervision of the state veterinary service and ministry departments.

"Four villages in the Omsk Region and two in the Altai Territory remain affected by bird flu," the ministry said.

On May 29, the ministry said bird flu had been registered in 10 villages in three West Siberian districts, including the Omsk Region and the Altai Territory.
