The proposal by the Russian Industry and Energy Ministry and electricity monopoly Unified Energy System (UES) to increase the government's stakes in power grid companies is justified, the Russian finance minister said Saturday.

The finance ministers of the Group of Eight industrialized nations adopted a statement Saturday on access to energy resources as part of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
"The meeting was a success, and the ministers' decisions have been published in a final communique and a special statement," Alexei Kudrin said. "The meeting confirms that St. Petersburg is not only a window to Europe but to the whole world."
The finance ministers of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations adopted Saturday a statement for the upcoming G8 leaders' summit.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday it was shocked by comments from the United States ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, who accused the Russian leadership of being split over the Iranian nuclear issue.
