BELGRADE, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's consul-general to Montenegro met with the Montenegrin foreign minister Monday to formalize the establishment of diplomatic ties.
Vladimir Vaniyev and Miodrag Vlahovic exchanged formal notes on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Montenegro following the Balkan nation's split from a union with Serbia, which has traditionally enjoyed warm relations with Russia due to shared Orthodox Christian traditions.
Montenegro's parliament declared independence for the former Yugoslav state on June 3 after Montenegrins voted in favor of breaking away from Serbia in a May 21 referendum.
