Russia will spend more than 10 times what it does now on civilian nuclear and radiation safety programs in 2007, the top official in the field said Tuesday.
MOSCOW, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will spend more than 10 times what it does now on civilian nuclear and radiation safety programs in 2007, the top official in the field said Tuesday.

"In 2007 we will increase spending on nuclear and radiation safety by 10 times, although this is still very little," Sergei Kiriyenko told reporters.

He said spending would reach 3 billion rubles (about $110 million) next year, compared with 200 million rubles (about $7.4 million) this year.

Kiriyenko said the agency intended to spend an additional 1.83 billion rubles (about $67.5 million) on nuclear and radiation safety next year.

He also said additional funds would go on solving problems at the Zheleznogorsk mining and chemical works in East Siberia's Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Mayak nuclear facility in the Chelyabinsk Region in the southern Urals.

Kiriyenko said the agency would draft by fall a program for Russia's nuclear and radiation safety for 15-20 years to deal with problems that have accumulated in the country's nuclear weapons industry.
