MOSCOW, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's president called on the international community Tuesday to work out universal principles of resolving regional conflicts.
Russia has consistently called for the same principles to be applied to conflict situations throughout the world, including in the former Soviet Union and Europe.
"Principles for the resolution [of conflicts] must be universal and rely on international law and respect for the interests of the peoples involved in the conflict," Putin told a conference with Russian ambassadors to international organizations at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
He said it was true of all regional conflicts, be it Kosovo in the former Yugoslavia, Cyprus, Georgia's breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, or the self-proclaimed republic of Transdnestr in Moldova.
