A 23-year-old student received multiple gunshot wounds after three gunmen broke into an apartment through a window early Friday in a prestigious southern district, investigators said. The gunmen stole a safe with money and jewelry.
"Law enforcement bodies received information about gunfire in an apartment in a residential block on Rublyovskoye Shosse," prosecutors said. "The apartment belongs to the president of a commercial organization."
The area, known locally as "Rublyovka", is regarded as an elite area, where many representatives of Russian's new business community live.
Investigators said the gunmen had entered the fifth-floor apartment, where the student was living temporarily, through a window and via the stairway balcony at about 1.40 a.m. Moscow time (9.40 p.m. GMT).
In another attack in the northwest of the capital, a 19-year-old student was shot in the stomach and chest after unidentified gunmen broke into his first-floor apartment through an open window.
"Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into attempted murder," said Sergei Marchenko, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
The young man has been hospitalized.
