STRELNA (near St. Petersburg), July 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Saturday that they would promote bilateral trade in uranium and liquefied natural gas.

The two leaders said in a joint statement that they would work to facilitate cooperation between Russian and Canadian companies in supplying LNG, uranium and other types of fuel to maintain their nations' energy security.

Putin and Harper held a bilateral meeting in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of a three-day Group of Eight summit, where energy security will be a prominent topic along with education and efforts against HIV/AIDS and bird flu pandemics.

The leaders of the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada have joined Harper and Putin for an informal dinner.
