Russia and Saudi Arabia call for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and for support for the Lebanon government to spread its authority over the country's entire territory, a Saudi minister said Tuesday.
MOSCOW, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Saudi Arabia call for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and for support for the Lebanon government to spread its authority over the country's entire territory, a Saudi minister said Tuesday.

Israel launched military action against Lebanon 13 days ago after Islamic militant group Hizbollah captured two Israeli servicemen in a cross-border raid.

After a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Saud Al Faisal said the positions of Russia and his country on the current crisis in Lebanon were very close.

A spokesman for the Saudi Foreign Ministry said earlier that Al Faisal's visit to Russia was part of the country's diplomatic efforts to find a solution to bloodshed in southern Lebanon to and bring the warring sides to the negotiating table.

The Saudi minister said that hopefully an international conference to be held in Rome later on Tuesday would focus on ways to end the violence and re-establish Lebanon's full sovereignty.

But he added that the Lebanese government would have a final say on the issue, and that his country would accept any decision of the Lebanese authorities.

Al Faisal who arrived in Moscow from Washington, said he hoped that U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who is now in the Middle East for talks with Lebanon and Israel, would bring specific ceasefire arrangements to the international conference in Rome.
