MOSCOW, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russian peacekeepers have confirmed reports about gunfire being exchanged in the Kodori Gorge in Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.
"Russian peacekeepers manning Checkpoint 107 in the Kodori Gorge registered a shootout three to four km to the east of the their post at about 7 p.m. Moscow time (3 p.m. GMT)," Col. Vyacheslav Sedov said, adding that the peacekeepers had been put on high alert.
The Defense Ministry of Abkhazia said earlier on Tuesday it had no information of gunfire being exchanged in the Kodori Gorge after Russia's Rossiya TV channel quoted peacekeepers in Kodori as saying that an armed clash had broken out in the troubled district.
The commander of the Georgian peacekeeping battalion said he had no knowledge about the clash.
"I have no such information," Valery Dzhaparidze said.
