MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - The defense of former Yukos security chief Alexei Pichugin has appealed the verdict brought against him August 17, lawyer Georgy Kaganer said Monday.

The Moscow City Court sentenced Pichugin, of the now bankrupt oil company Yukos, to 24 years in prison for two murders and organizing a murder attempt.

"We filed a short complaint with Russia's Supreme Court in which we ask it to reverse the sentence against Pichugin as illegal and unfounded," Kaganer said.

He added that a full complaint would be filed when the defense received a copy of the verdict.
