Russian FM to visit Middle East September 7-8 - 1
MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will pay routine visits to Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Palestinian territories September 7 through 8, the ministry said Friday.
"The upcoming talks with the leaders of these countries and the Palestinian National Authority must confirm Russia's unwavering attention to this strategically important region by seeking a comprehensive, stable and just peace settlement in the Middle East," the ministry said.
The ministry said Lavrov's trip would focus on the situation around Lebanon following the adoption of UN Security Council's resolution 1701 on a ceasefire between Israel and Hizbollah that came into force August 14.
"Russia was proactive in securing the adoption [of the resolution] and making its provisions balanced and intends to engage in energetic work to assist its implementation by all sides," the ministry said.
The ministry also said Lavrov would also discuss the peacekeeping operation in southern Lebanon, international aid to Lebanon and Palestine and resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
