The international community can fight terrorism effectively only by consolidating its efforts, the speaker of the lower house of Russia's parliament said Sunday.
MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - The international community can fight terrorism effectively only by consolidating its efforts, the speaker of the lower house of Russia's parliament said Sunday.

Boris Gryzlov spoke on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and on United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, in which about 3,000 people had died.

"Such dates, which are linked with tragic events and the death of people, consolidate the international community in the fight against its common enemy - terrorism," Gryzlov said. "Citizens of Russia remember September 11, 2001 and grieve together with the U.S. people over the terrorist attacks' innocent victims."

The State Duma speaker said the response to terrorism must be adequate and the international community must act jointly rather than separately.

"Russia is seeking such cooperation and always says this issue is topical for the entire world rather than for separate countries where the threat of terrorism is especially acute," Gryzlov said.

The speaker said a meeting of the parliament heads from the G8 group of industrialized nations in St. Petersburg next week provided another opportunity for the leading world powers to harmonize their positions and raise the general level of trust between them.
