MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow prosecutors have confirmed that Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in the central part of the city.

Earlier, Novaya Gazeta chief editor Dmitry Muratov said the journalist was killed from firearms at the stairway of the residential building she lived in at about 16.30 Moscow time.

Prosecutors said an unknown person clad in black opened fire on Politkovskaya from a handgun at 17.15 Moscow time.

The source said the arms used to commit the murder have not been found yet.

The chief prosecutor of Moscow, Yury Syomin, has left for the crime scene.

An investigation is underway.
