MAKHACHKALA, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - Two suspected militants were killed early Wednesday in a special operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan, local police said.

Law enforcers found a group of three militants in a forested area near the village Gamiyaks in the Novolaksky district. Two of them were killed in a shootout, and one escaped. The search for the militant is under way, a spokesman said.

No casualties among police have been reported.

Although authorities have announced that the active phase of the counter-terrorism operation in neighboring Chechnya is over, violence has continued to affect the North Caucasus as a whole.

An amnesty for fighters who surrendered was announced July 15, after the killing of the region's number one terrorist, Shamil Basayev, promising leniency for militants not involved in major atrocities.

A law granting amnesty to militants and servicemen who committed offenses during the antiterrorism campaign in the North Caucasus came into force in late September.

More than 300 militants have accepted the surrender offer since its announcement, most of them in Chechnya, according to Nikolai Patrushev, head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and the National Antiterrorism Committee.
