GROZNY, November 27 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer has been killed in a road accident involving three vehicles from the Chechen president's motorcade, but Alu Alkhanov was not injured, a presidential spokesman said Monday.

"A Volga sedan crashed into the Chechen president's motorcade in the early hours of Monday on the Kavkaz (Caucasus) federal highway in the Republic of Ingushetia," the official said, adding that Alkhanov was heading to Grozny for a meeting with a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's (PACE) delegation in Chechnya's capital.

Said-Magomed Itsarayev said the police officer, Ivan Dikonenko, was assigned to Alkhanov's protection service on a mission to Grozny from the Interior Ministry of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Adygea.

He said four presidential bodyguards have been hospitalized following the accident, one of them in a serious condition. Chechen police earlier said three people have been injured, including one woman.

Itsarayev said the Volga driver, a local resident, was heavily drunk.

Police said the car drove into the oncoming lane and collided with three cars that were part of President Alu Alkhanov's escort.

An investigation into the accident is under way, police said.
