MOSCOW, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who underwent surgery in Germany to prevent a stroke last week, was discharged Wednesday, his aide said.

Gorbachev, 75, was admitted to the Grosshadern clinic in Munich with pre-stroke symptoms and had a surgical operation on his right internal carotid artery last Tuesday.

"[Gorbachev] will spend a few more days in Germany and will then return home," Vladimir Polyakov said.

Famous for his efforts to reshape East-West relations and for overseeing major liberal reforms in Russia, Gorbachev now heads the Gorbachev Foundation, an independent socioeconomic and political think-tank he founded.

He was expected to attend the seventh international conference of Nobel Peace Prize winners in Rome November 17. But the charismatic leader chose to follow his doctors' advice, and canceled the trip to undergo a medical examination, a Foundation spokesman said earlier.
