GORNO-ALTAISK, December 29 (RIA Novosti) - A Siberian court Friday sentenced Ruslan Kulish, 17, convicted of the murder of a local journalist and his family, to 10 years in prison, a court spokesman said.

Alexander Petrov, the editor-in-chief of a local magazine, was killed August 8 in southwestern Siberia, together with his wife and two children, aged three and seven.

"This is the maximum sentence a court can impose on someone who is underaged," Yury Bolychev, a state prosecutor said, adding that Petrov would serve his term at a juvenile correctional facility until he turns 18, and would then be transferred to a standard penal colony.

An investigation established that Kulish, who worked as a cattle farmer, killed the four while they were vacationing along a mountain river in the Altai Region to steal their car, and that the murder had nothing to do with Petrov's professional activities.

"Passing by a parking lot near where the Petrovs were vacationing, he decided to steal their car," the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said earlier. "He shot the parents and their children with a gun he had on him. But as the victims were not immediately killed, he finished them off with an axe and a rock before dumping their bodies into the river."

Kulish, who was arrested only several days after the murder, admitted his guilt but said in court he was unaware of what he was doing.
